Bringing BSA Compliance Costs Back Down to Earth
Back in 2001, the top few percent of banks (i.e., those with many billions in assets) found that they needed to pay millions of dollars for software, training and consulting help to bring their BSA programs into compliance. The costs of compliance were high because many of the required products and services had yet to be developed. Over time however, as AML products were developed and the market for them matured, market economics should have driven prices lower. The same quality products and services -performing similar functions in similar ways- should long ago have been available to the mass market at prices discounted from 2001 levels. Economists refer to this natural market phenomenon as commoditization.
